Mask Mandate Goes into Effect in South Fulton

South Fulton's City Council passed an emergency ordinance tonight requiring masks or facial coverings to be worn in public places starting tomorrow, July 11 at 12 p.m. The ordinance passed with a vote of 5 to 2. It's the latest step that officials in the city have taken to slow the spread of COVID-19. According to the legislation, anyone within six feet of another person that they do not live with will be required to wear a mask. All customers, visitors and delivery persons in commercial establishments are required to wear masks. Additionally, business owners, managers and supervisors must require their employees and contractors to wear a face covering at all times while interacting with the public. Local governments are weighing the option of making masks mandatory in public places to slow the spread of COVID-19. Officials in the City of South Fulton will hold an emergency special called meeting today to discuss and potentially approve the measure. According to a news release, the City of South Fulton will start the first of a three-phase process to reopen on July 13. South Fulton to Host Summer Cleanup Day on July 18

Updated 7/8/2020 at 3:48 p.m. South Fulton residents will have a chance to dispose of their bulky waste for free during the city’s 2020 Summer Cleanup Day on July 18 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. This year's designated drop-off locations are Merk Miles Transfer Station, 3225 Merk Road, and Creel Park, 2775 Creel Road. Curbside pickup is available for senior citizens ages 65 and older and residents with disabilities. Registration is required for these individuals at (470) 552-4311 by Wednesday, July 15. A list of acceptable bulky trash items is available on the City of South Fulton's website. Adhesives, aerosols, cardboard, furniture and tires will be accepted at the Merk Miles location only. Officials Partner with Churches to Offer More Walk-Up COVID-19 Testing

The Fulton County Board of Health has partnered with local churches and members of South Fulton's City Council to offer more drive-thru and walk-up COVID-19 testing. Councilmembers Carmalitha Gumbs and Helen Z. Willis will join Pastor Dr. Gregory Pollard to host two free testing events at The Enon Church, 3550 Enon Road. The events will be held on July 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Hot meals will also be provided. City Council Hires Special Counsel to Determine Legality of House Bills, Charter Changes

Two bills authored by the South Fulton legislative delegation recently passed under the Gold Dome, HB 921 and HB 1019. The City Council is now challenging the merits of the legislation. In a special called emergency meeting yesterday, the City Council voted to authorize special counsel to advise them on both bills during an executive session. At the conclusion of the session, the body voted to have special counsel investigate the constitutionality of the legislation and report back in two weeks. South Fulton's Mayor and City Council and the Development Authority are both scheduled to meet later today. The Mayor and Council will hold a virtual Special Called Emergency Meeting at 11 a.m. They'll go into executive session to discuss personnel and litigation.
