Community Rallies to Support Ponder’s Cleaners Amid Financial Hardship

Ponder’s Cleaners has been open on Campbellton Road for decades. But due to financial hardship caused by the pandemic, the business is in jeopardy of closing.

The family-owned business applied for COVID-19 relief funds, but didn’t receive them. Leigh Johnson shared the news on social media this week. Her grandmother, Margaret, opened Ponder’s 60 Minute Cleaners 40 years ago.

Since Johnson’s announcement, community members have issued a rallying cry, asking for residents of the entire metro Atlanta area to help keep the longstanding black-owned business afloat. Among those mobilizing support for Ponder’s is Councilwoman Catherine Foster Rowell.

“The Ponders are South Fulton residents, let’s support them,” she said.

City Solicitor LaDawn Blackett Jones echoed the sentiment, adding how Mr. Ponder has helped other local businesses and the Women of Westlake over the years. An Instagram post from rapper Killer Mike in support of the business has garnered over 70,000 likes.

Ponder’s Cleaners is located at 4473 Campbellton Road, S.W. at the corner of County Line Road. For COVID-19 business hours call 404-349-6464. Donations can be made via CashApp at $PondersCleaners.
