Georgia Roots Urban Farm Opens in South Fulton

Georgia Roots Urban Farm is open for business in the city of South Fulton, and residents are already taking advantage of having farm-fresh produce in their backyard. A variety of fruits and vegetables are available through the farm's community supported agriculture (CSA) program, a subscription-based harvest box available for pick up twice a month. Additionally, its farm store is open Friday through Sunday at 3415 Enon Road. The farm's owners, Kennise and Kwesi Elder, hosted members of the community during a mixer on June 7, and opened their farm store on June 14. So far, their inventory has included kale, collards, okra, peaches, blueberries, seeded watermelon, eggs, a variety of fresh herbs and more. South Fulton Ethics Board to Hold First Meeting on June 24

The City of South Fulton Board of Ethics will hold its inaugural meeting at City Hall (5440 Fulton Industrial Boulevard) on Monday, June 24 at 6:00 p.m. Mayor William "Bill" Edwards and each member of the City Council were given the opportunity to appoint a member to the board. The members are: Overtis Hicks Brantley, Esq.; Charles Hodges, Esq.; Kenneth F. Joe; Jill E. Pope, Esq.; Jewel Johnson; and Kalvin Johnson. Brantley, appointed by Mayor Edwards, will serve as the chairperson. One seat, to be filled by Councilman khalid kamau, remains vacant. South Fulton Police Department Donates Car Seats to Families in Need

The City of South Fulton Police Department and the Georgia Department of Public Safety recently teamed up for a community outreach effort around car seat safety. The officers performed car seat inspections, provided drivers with corrective measures and donated nearly a dozen car seats to families in need. The efforts align with National Safety Month activities taking place across the U.S. this June. Observed annually, the awareness campaign focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road and in homes and communities.  According to the South Fulton Police Department, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death of children in Georgia. Chamber Helps Local Leaders Sharpen Skills with New Programming

The South Fulton Chamber is on the move. The organization unveiled new offices in December and has been working on the relaunch of Leadership South Fulton. The relaunch kicks off with Leadercast this Saturday, June 7. It’s one of the largest one-day leadership events in the world. The event brings a host of renowned speakers to South Fulton via a broadcast, including Gayle King, and Andy Stanley. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Gateway Hotel (2081 Convention Center Concourse). The programming distinguishes the South Fulton Chamber from most chambers in the country. Langston Hughes High’s Tenga Places 3rd in Congressional Art Competition

Langston Hughes High School's David Tenga has placed third in Congressman David Scott's 17th Annual Congressional Art Competiton. Tenga's submission entitled "A Bit of Me" earned him a $3500 scholarship from The Art Institute of Atlanta, a $650 summer seminar scholarship from The Savannah College of Art and Design and a $400 scholarship from sponsors AT&T and Georgia Power. Additionally, Tenga's work will hang in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s Youth Art Gallery for one year. Father's Day is June 16 and there are several events taking place to celebrate and honor South Fulton's dads. Councilwoman Naeema Gilyard will host a Father's Day Appreciation event in partnership with Arlington Christian School (4500 Ridge Road) on June 15 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The event will include free food and drinks and a special surprise. Sandtown Middle Raises over $13,000 during Every Kid Healthy Week

Sandtown Middle School set a $10,000 fundraising goal for National Every Kid Health Week, which culminated with the school’s inaugural PTSA 3K Color Fun Run. With the help of parents, community members and generous sponsors, including Councilwoman Catherine Foster Rowell, the goal was exceeded by more than $3,000. Every Kid Health Week is an annual observance held April 22 – 26 to celebrate school health and wellness achievements and to demonstrate the link between nutrition, physical activity and learning.
