Rashad Richey Joins Officials to Host Virtual Candidate Forums

Social distancing won’t stop South Fulton voters from hearing from candidates before the June 9 election.

Councilwomen Carmalitha Gumbs and Helen Z. Willis have partnered with the Cedar Grove Community Association to host a series of virtual candidate forums. WAOK’s Dr. Rashad Richey will moderate the events.

The first forum will be held on April 20 at 6:00 p.m. and feature candidates in the race for Fulton County Sheriff. Of the five candidates, three have confirmed.

Voters can attend online via Zoom with the password COSFFORUM. They also have the option to call in at (929) 205-6099 using the meeting ID 972-8177-1101 and password 900921.

Councilwoman Willis said it’s important for voters to get to know the candidates that could potentially be making decisions that impact the Cliftondale, Welcome All and Cedar Grove communities.

“We decided to do a forum so that residents can get a full understanding of the candidates’ platforms and make educated votes,” said Willis. “The purpose is not to promote campaigns or endorse candidates, but to educate voters on who the candidates are.”

After the April 20 virtual candidate forum, five additional events will follow:

  • April 27, Fulton County District Attorney and Probate Judge Candidates
  • April 30, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Candidates
  • May 11, Fulton County District 6 Commissioner and District 4 School Board Candidates
  • May 14, Georgia House of Representatives District 65 Candidates
  • May 18, Georgia Senate Districts 35 and 39 Candidates

All of the events will take place at 6 p.m.

Councilwoman Gumbs said it’s important for voters to stay engaged even as they shelter in place.

“Even though people are having less interaction with candidates this election season, it’s important that they are still engaged,” she said. “Take advantage of this opportunity to connect with these candidates from the comfort of your home, and get the information you need to be confident when you cast your vote.”
