South Fulton’s sororities and fraternities had a major presence in the city’s census rally earlier this year. Now members of those organizations are doubling down on their commitment to spread the word about the importance of the census and the 2020 election season with a new joint event.
The Omicron Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Tau Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will hold a Voter Education and Census Awareness Forum on Saturday, April 4. The event will take place at Welcome All Park, 4255 Will Lee Road, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The event is open to residents of the cities of South Fulton, College Park and East Point. Information will be provided on how to respond to the census and how to use the census website. This year marks the first time that citizens will be able to respond online.
Additionally, a variety of voter education topics will be addressed including how to navigate Georgia’s new voter machines, what to do if you’re turned away at the polls and how to use an absentee ballot.
“Now, more than any other time in our past, communities of color have an opportunity to effectuate policy changes on the federal, state and local levels that benefit us,” said Corey Adams, Chair, Community Partnerships , Omicron Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “This opportunity starts with registering as many citizens as possible to realize the full voting power that communities of color possess.”
“As critical as voting is, it is equally critical for residents to complete the census forms and more importantly encourage their neighbors to complete the forms, he continued. “Millions of dollars in federal and state aid are dependent on an accurate count, as well as the opportunity to gain additional political representation in Congress.”
Registration for the Voter Education and Census Awareness Forum is free. Attendees are encouraged to sign up via Eventbrite.
