Mausiki Scales, Atlanta Drum Academy Lead Red Oak Festival Lineup

The Annual Red Oak Art Festival returns to the City of South Fulton on Saturday, Oct. 15. Now in its second year, the festival promises an expanded lineup of artists, artisans and performers from across the metro Atlanta area. This year’s musical lineup includes performances by Mausiki Scales and Common Ground Collective, Planet Alstarz, local cellist Jenn Cornell, and classical guitarist Gladius.  A performance by the Atlanta Drum Academy is also planned. Members of the academy have been featured in film and television, including NBC’s Little Big Shots. Rowell Recognized for ‘Outstanding Leadership’ at Annual Pinnacle Awards Luncheon

This weekend, District 1 Councilwoman Dr. Catherine Foster Rowell and several other community service leaders were presented with 2022 Pinnacle Leadership Awards. The honors were bestowed by the Fortitude Education and Cultural Development Center, Inc. Sandtown Residents Collaborate with Artist on City’s First Creative Placemaking Project

After a series of community brainstorming meetings and coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), South Fulton's first creative placemaking project has been installed. The four-panel monument in the roundabout at the intersection of Campbellton, Boat Rock and New Hope showcases the diverse natural surroundings of the Sandtown community. The project, which began in 2018, was spearheaded by District 1 Councilwoman Catherine Foster Rowell. She tapped local artist Allen Peterson to produce the artwork. Over a period of several months, Peterson and his design partner, Julia Hill, toured the Sandtown community and took photos for inspiration, and collaborated with residents on imagery and design during multiple meetings. Quilt Festival Opens at Southwest Arts Center on Aug. 6

The 14th Annual Atlanta Quilt Festival is headed to Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road. The exhibit, held in partnership with Acres of Ancestry, South Fulton Institute and Southern Poverty Law Center, will run Aug. 6 thru Sept. 2. Over 100 quilts celebrating the African-American heritage will be displayed. This year's exhibit will honor the life and legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis. The "Good Trouble Quilts," a collection of more than 20 pieces, will be on display.Congressman Lewis represented Georgia's 5th District until his death. Barrington Trace to Host Community Garage Sale

South Fulton residents who love a good treasure hunt are in luck. The residents of Barrington Trace will hold their inaugural community garage sale this weekend. The event will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Participating residents will have balloons on their mailboxes. Items for sale will include glassware, bowls, home decor, dining ware, lamps, framed art, tools, clothing and more. All items will be "priced to go." Children’s Book Festival Set for May 14

A new Children's Book Festival is coming to the metro area thanks to the Fulton County Library System, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation and presenting sponsor PNC Bank. South Fulton to Hold Spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 21

South Fulton will hold its annual Spring Cleanup Day this year on Saturday, May 21. The city will accept bulky items for free disposal at Merk Miles Transfer Station, 3070 Merk Road, and Creel Park, 2775 Creel Road. Paper shredding will be available at Merk Road only. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gates will close at 1:30 p.m. Free disposal is available only to South Fulton residents. The city will accept cardboard, furniture, garbage, paint and a maximum of four tires. Items that will not be accepted include: commercial vehicles; rented trucks; yard waste; ammunition; biohazard or biomedical waste; batteries; construction demolition debris; and hazardous chemicals. Ways to Give Back in South Fulton on MLK Day Weekend

There will be multiple ways to give back to the community over the long weekend in observance of MLK Day, also recognized as a national day of service. District 1 Councilwoman Catherine Rowell will join Southeastern Trust for Parks and Land for an event to beautify the Campbellton Creek Nature Preserve. The event will be held on Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. Participants should meet event organizers between Plummer Road and Riverside Drive in South Fulton. Parking is available in the Publix shopping center, to the left of Arden’s Garden. Registration is required.
