Atlanta Track Club 12K Planned for Saturday in South Fulton

The Jerome Scales Southside 12K presented by Delta® Air Lines is planned for Saturday, Jan. 11 in South Fulton. The race is coordinated in partnership with the Atlanta Track Club and the South Fulton Running Partners, and is the second stop on the 2020 Grand Prix Series presented by Piedmont Healthcare.

Event organizers are expecting 1,250 attendees, and the race will start and finish at Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Registration is still open. New this year, participants will have the option to run the 12K distance or a 4.3 mile fun run. 12K finishers are eligible for overall, age grade and age group awards. Fun run finishers are eligible for Grand Prix participation points only.

Jerome Scales was a longtime member of Atlanta Track Club who served on its Board of Directors for seven years. Diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2016, he died on June 20, 2019.

Jerome was a fixture in the Atlanta running community, spreading his love for running to anyone nearby. Even after he was diagnosed, he never let the disease deter him from running or from influencing others to do the same. He adopted the motto “one mile at a time,” and focused on finding joy in the journey of running regardless of how far or how fast.

Atlanta Track Club is honoring his memory by renaming this event the Jerome Scales Southside 12K presented by Delta Air Lines. Scales was an employee of Delta Air Lines. After hearing about his impact on the Club, community and employees, Delta agreed to be the presenting sponsor of the race.

Atlanta Track Club events are held rain or shine. The South Fulton city council is scheduled to convene for a special called meeting on Jan. 10 to approve the event’s use permit.
