South Fulton Councilwomen Host Back-to-School Events

South Fulton officials are planning back-to-school events to make sure local students are prepared.

District 2 Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs will host a drive-through Back-to-School Bash on Saturday, August 15 at Westlake High School, 2400 Union Road, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Each student will receive a backpack filled with supplies.

“While this school year may be starting differently for parents and students, we want to make sure they still have the same level of support,” said Gumbs, who hosts back-to-school events annually. “Now more than ever families are in need of help and resources, and with the help of generous sponsors and volunteers, we’re able to help meet those needs.”

District 3 Councilwoman Helen Z. Willis will host an event today, August 14 at Siloam International Church, 3695 Roosevelt Hwy. for the residents of Hickory Park. She’ll host a second event on Saturday, August 15 at The Gardens at Camp Creek, 4555 Washington Road. Both events will be held from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Families who reside in the two South Fulton apartment communities will receive school supplies, boxes of produce, masks and hand sanitizer.

“Remote learning begins for these students Monday,” Willis said. “I want to let families in my district know that we have not forgotten about them and the struggles many of them are facing in the middle of a pandemic.”
