Miracle League Recruiting Players, Volunteers for Fall Season

The South Fulton Miracle League’s fall season is underway. The league held their first game on September 12 at Welcome All Park. The Miracle League was first launched in 2000 in Georgia. It has since evolved into a global program that helps remove the barriers that keep players with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field. The South Fulton chapter has operated as a nonprofit organization in the area for 15 years at Welcome All Park. Games have two innings. Everyone bats, everyone gets a chance to cross home plate and everyone wins. Lady Stallions Get Ready to Kick off Fall Season

Now in its third year, the Lady Stallions Kickball Team is on a roll. The program provides women in the community with a fun way to stay in shape and make new friends. The team plays three seasons out of the year, and this spring went 7-0. Later this month, the Lady Stallions will kick off the fall season, and all women ages 18 and up are welcome to join in on the fun. “We fellowship, network and support each other, and help each other stay fit,” said Delphine Knaff, a 50-year old South Fulton Lady Stallions team member who plays pitcher as well as other positions. “We’ve had women in the league that are 60 and 70 years old, your age doesn’t matter.” While the team has strong presence in South Fulton and routinely practices at Sandtown Park, there’s technically not a kickball ...

After Undefeated, History-Making Season, Banneker Retires Hall’s Racket

Banneker High School's tennis program was relaunched just two years ago by Coach Patricia Swift. Already, the school is making history. During the 2019 season, Banneker's Bryce Hall went undefeated and earned the distinction of becoming the school's first-ever Georgia High School Association's Region 6-AAAAA Tennis Player of the Year. In recognition of his achievement, his racket has been retired and is now on display on the high school's campus. “I hope to see Bryce playing in the U. S. Open and Wimbledon one day,” Coach Swint said. “I’m not sure that’s what he wants to do, but I hope that whatever he chooses to do will make him happy.” Whatever the path, Hall has demonstrated that he has what it takes to be successful. His perseverance is just one of the traits that helped him ...

The visit was part of USTA’s Net Generation Campaign which aims to inspire and help build a new generation of tennis greats. Williams took time to hit a few balls, give high fives and offer pointers and words of encouragement to approximately 100 kids enrolled in the center's tennis camp. "More than anything I enjoyed spending time with the kids here," said Williams. "I would love to come back, I'd like this not to be the last time." (Story continues below.) The team compiled a record of 29-1. “This was our first championship,” Coach Hankerson said. “It was for everyone who ever played Westlake basketball.” With laser-like focus, the team had its eye on a perfect season in 2019. Westlake’s Alston Becomes First Female Varsity Football Player to Score

In a matchup against Alabama’s Lanier High School in August, Kendyle Alston became Westlake’s first female player to score in a varsity football game. Last month, the senior put an exclamation point on her career when she again kicked for an extra point helping her team to defeat Wheeler. She says wasn’t trying to make history, but she’s done just that. “I just wanted to play football and to be a part of the team,” Alston said. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I will remember for the rest of my life.” Alston credits Westlake’s football coach Kareem Reid for giving her a chance to play the sport. “My parents and I are grateful to Coach Reid for allowing me this opportunity,” she said. “He and my teammates have welcomed me on the team and I appreciate that.” Alston learned to...
