Back-to-School Events Offer Free Backpacks, Haircuts and More

Looking for free backpacks, haircuts and more to get ready for the upcoming school year? There are a number of back-to-school events planned to help parents and students prepare to head back to the classroom, and celebrate the end of the summer with a little bit of fun.

Backpacks Galore and Other Giveaways

Fulton County Commissioner Marvin Arrington will host his 8th Annual It Takes a Village Back-to-School Giveaway July 29 at Wolf Creek Library, 3100 Enon Road, from 5-6 p.m. Register via Eventbrite.

The 3rd Annual Healthy Family Fun and Sports Day returns to Sandtown Park, 5320 Campbellton Rd. on July 30 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event, in partnership with Councilmembers Catherine Foster Rowell and Carmalitha Gumbs, features food, entertainment and vendors offering a variety of wellness resources and essentials for the upcoming school year. More than 700 backpacks will be given away to attendees.

Fulton County Schools (FCS) will host First Day Fulton on July 30 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at both Banneker High School, 6015 Feldwood Rd., and North Springs High School, 7447 Roswell Rd. The event offers FCS families all the resources they need before the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 8. There will be opportunities to pick up free school supplies and backpacks while supplies last. The event will also include a health fair featuring free physical and mental health screenings, immunizations and 3300 forms as well as free and reduced lunch applications, bus route information and interpreter services. Additionally, the Atlanta Community Food Bank will distribute food to families. All activities are free, but open only to FCS students. For more information, visit fultonschools.org/firstdayfulton.
 
Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Kandi Burruss and Kandi C.A.R.E.S. will host a Back-to-School Giveaway on July 30 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Jefferson Park Recreation Center (1431 Norman Berry Dr.) in East Point. Free backpacks, school supplies, food and beverages will be available.

Councilwoman Natasha Williams will host a Back-to-School Bash at Love T. Nolan Elementary, 2725 Creel Road, on Aug. 4 from 3-6 p.m. Free backpacks and school supplies will be available. Food trucks and bounce houses will also be onsite.

Councilwoman Helen Willis and Commissioner Marvin Arrington will host a School Supply Giveaway, Fitness Challenge and Basketball Game on Aug. 6 from 1-4 p.m. at Welcome All Park, 4255 Will Lee Rd. Health screenings, free school supplies, COVID-19 vaccinations and more will be available. Tip-off between the Georgia Spartans and Georgia Vipers will take place at 2 p.m.

Ignite Resource Center College Park will host a Back 2 School Resource Fair on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 12-4 p.m. at the Georgia International Convention Center, 2000 Convention Center Concourse in Exhibit Hall D. Free backpacks, school supplies, face masks, groceries and health and financial information will be available.

Free Haircuts

World Changers Church International will host its annual back-to-school event on Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m until 1 p.m. Free physicals, haircuts and school supplies will be available. Register by texting B2School to 51555.

Blankies 4 My Buddies in collaboration with community partners will host a Back to School Kickoff and community football game on Aug. 6 from 12-4 p.m. at Old National Park, 2400 Pleasant Hill Road. Game kickoff will take place at 12 p.m., and giveaways (backpacks, school supplies, groceries) will begin at 2 p.m. Basic hair braiding and haircuts will be available for the first 100 attendees. Registration is required for braiding and haircut services.

Witherite Law Group and V-103 will take over two SWAGG Shop locations where the first 80 children at each location will receive a free haircut just in time for the first day of school. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 6 at stores located at 365 Edgewood Ave SE and 3461 Roosevelt Hwy., Suite 16.

Family Fun

PHIT Gym, 7496 Old National Highway, will host a Back-to-School Community Bash on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Bring the family out to enjoy bounce houses, music, food trucks, local vendors and giveaways for students.
