Legendary Lady Lions Run away with a Three-Peat at State Championships

The Westlake Lady Lions delivered the Collins Hill Eagles their first loss of the year at tonight's GHSA Basketball State Championships in Macon. Relentless at both ends of the court, the Lions ran away with a 72 to 53-point victory to defend their state 7A title for the third year in a row. The talented high schoolers were dominant the entire game bringing a professional-level performance to Middle Georgia, and stamping their place in state history. Their victory marked a 15-game winning streak this season and a 90-game winning streak against Georgia players over the last three years. Westlake Lady Lions to Defend State Title on Saturday

The Westlake Lady Lions are set to defend their state title on Saturday, March 7 at the 2020 GHSA / Dr. Ralph Swearngin Basketball State Championships presented by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance. If they capture the victory, it will be their third state championship win in a row. Westlake, ranked No. 1, will take on the No. 2-ranked Collins Hill Eagles at 5:30 p.m. In 2019, the Lions beat the Eagles 60-53 in the Class AAAAAAA girls final. As the Lions sets their sights on a likely three-peat, Westlake's Director of Athletics Carl Green says the team is "destined for greatness." South Fulton STEM School to be Named Global Impact Academy

The Fulton County Board of Education has approved the name Global Impact Academy for the new South Fulton STEM school.The name was put forth by a steering committee comprised of educators, elected officials and school governance council members. It was first presented to the board for consideration at the Jan. 14 work session, and then approved at the Feb. 20 meeting. The name reflects the school district’s desire to provide a rigorous environment where students attain the knowledge and skills to positively impact the world. The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Anaheim, Calif. is where the high schoolers of today that will change the world go to meet their future peers. Langston Hughes, Westlake Girls Basketball Teams Advance to State Playoffs

The City of South Fulton will have two girls basketball teams to root for during this year's Georgia High School Association's state playoffs. This weekend Langston Hughes High and Westlake High won their regional championships and advanced. Langston Hughes' Lady Panthers reclaimed their Region 5 - 6A Championship title with a 53 to 36 victory over Douglas County High School. South Fulton Schools Earn Advanced Placement Honors

Georgia’s public-school class of 2019 has the 17th-highest Advanced Placement (AP) pass rate in the nation, according to recent data released by the College Board. Following the announcement, State School Superintendent Woods has named 255 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools for 2020. Six South Fulton schools made the list. Schools were recognized across eight categories: AP Access and Support Schools, AP Challenge Schools, AP Schools of Distinction, AP Expansion Schools, AP Humanities Schools, AP Humanities Achievement Schools, AP STEM Schools and AP STEM Achievement Schools. The Fulton County Board of Education underwent leadership changes at its January 14 work session.
