South Fulton Marching Bands to Showcase Talent in Sept. 21 Exhibition

Fifteen Fulton County Schools marching bands will showcase their talents in the district's annual Marching Band Exhibition on Saturday, September 21 at 5:45 p.m. The event will take place at the stadium at Cambridge High School (2845 Bethany Bend) in Milton, Ga. Participating high schools include Banneker, Creekside, Langston Hughes, Tri-Cities and Westlake. Members of the South Fulton community have already had a number of opportunities to see their local high school bands perform at pep rallies and sporting events. Additionally, members of the Westlake High School band performed during the city of South Fulton's National Night Out and helped to welcome elementary students on the first day of school. School Board Members Bryant and Dove to Hold First Community Meeting of the School Year on Sept. 16

Fulton County School Board President Linda Bryant will hold a joint community meeting with District 6 Board Member Kimberly Dove on September 16 at Camp Creek Middle School. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. School board community meetings are held nearly monthly and are open to the public. The sessions provide an opportunity for the public to have direct contact with school leaders and give board members a chance to listen to local issues and concerns. After Undefeated, History-Making Season, Banneker Retires Hall’s Racket

Banneker High School's tennis program was relaunched just two years ago by Coach Patricia Swift. Already, the school is making history. During the 2019 season, Banneker's Bryce Hall went undefeated and earned the distinction of becoming the school's first-ever Georgia High School Association's Region 6-AAAAA Tennis Player of the Year. In recognition of his achievement, his racket has been retired and is now on display on the high school's campus. “I hope to see Bryce playing in the U. S. A longtime professional skydiver, Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney is known for jumping out of planes. Today the charismatic educator is jumping right into the school day routine as Fulton County Schools' students start the 2019-2020 school year. Make no mistake about it, the start of a new school year can be just as daunting for parents as it is for the child. Fulton County Schools students continue to perform as well or better than the state average, according to the recently released Georgia Milestones Spring 2019 assessment. Student proficiency in the areas of English and Math increased across all grade levels. Several South Fulton elementary, middle and high schools saw gains. Additionally, McNair Middle School led the district in overall progress. Thousands of Free Backpacks to be Distributed at Back-to-School Events in South Fulton

Back-to-school events kicked off in South Fulton this weekend with the 2nd Annual Healthy South Fuilton Family Fun Day. The event is sponsored by Touch of Life Chiropractic in partnership with Councilwomen Catherine Foster Rowell and Carmalitha Gumbs. Each year, hundreds of backpacks are given away. Additionally, vendors are available to connect families to important resources including healthcare providers, afterschool programs, extracurricular activities and more. School Board to Discuss Millage Rate at July 16 Meeting

The Fulton County Board of Education will meet Tuesday, July 16 at the school system’s North Learning Center, located at 450 Northridge Parkwayin Sandy Springs. The board will convene for executive session at 9:30 a.m. with a pre-work session immediately following. The business meeting will begin at 1 pm. The millage rate will be on the agenda. The tentative 2019 millage rate is 17.796. The rate will result in a decrease in property tax revenue from reassessed property by 4.16% based on the calculated 2019 tax digest. School board meetings can be watched live on FCSTV Comcast Channel 24 or from a computer through the videostreaming website.
