South Fulton Students ‘Bring the Culture’ in History-Making Debate Win at Harvard

Last year, an all-black team of high school debaters took the top prize at Harvard University’s prestigious summer debate tournament. This year, they’ve done it again. And two South Fulton schools are represented among the victors. Banneker High School’s Xavier Shankle and Westlake’s Keith Harris are participants in the Harvard Diversity Project, an Atlanta-based pipeline program of the Harvard Debate Council. After a week-long tournament, their team outperformed experienced debaters from 15 countries, bringing home an incredible consecutive victory. In the quarter-finals, the team held five of the eight top spots, showcasing their dominance. Harris, along with North Atlanta High School’s Don Roman, Jr., achieved an unprecedented, undefeated record despite having no prior debate e...

Westlake High School’s Lady Lions received their back-to-back state basketball championship rings in a recent ceremony.“We’ve had some great athletes and some great students who’ve come through our program,” Coach Hilda Hankerson said. “You don’t repeat state championships without having a strong core, a nucleus you can depend on to win that championship again.”   Westlake won their first-ever state championship in Georgia’s 7A division in 2018. The team compiled a record of 29-1. “This was our first championship,” Coach Hankerson said. “It was for everyone who ever played Westlake basketball.” With laser-like focus, the team had its eye on a perfect season in 2019. Lady Lions from the 2018 championship team added a second ring to their fingers at the ceremony and had th...

NFL Veteran Teams up with Arlington Christian on Community Garden

A new initiative is in bloom at Arlington Christian School. In the spring of this year, NFL veteran Sean Jones teamed up with students and staff to break ground on a community garden. The garden is the beginning of what administrators hope to be a comprehensive STEM program. Jones, owner of Hillside Farms Atlanta, was initially approached by Michael Carson, Arlington Christian’s head football coach, to join his staff as a defensive coordinator. Carson coached Jones two decades ago when he was a football player at Westlake High School. After learning how Jones had developed a passion for agriculture after retiring from the NFL, Carson thought he’d be a perfect partner for a community garden. The seed was planted and the idea grew from there. “After I retired from football, ...
