South Fulton City Hall Closes for Mold Remediation

City of South Fulton officials have announced that City Hall will be temporarily closed starting today, Feb. 20, due to the discovery of mold in the building. Extensive mold was found in three offices at 5440 Fulton Industrial Blvd. during recent inspections, prompting officials to take action. To fully address the issue, the landlord and the city have decided that substantial drywall removal is necessary in all impacted areas with exterior windows. While remediation work takes place, the Community Development and Regulatory Affairs (CDRA) department will relocate to 6095 Boat Rock Blvd. CDRA handles the intake and processing of land disturbance permits, building permits, plan review and other planning and zoning activities. South Fulton Department Budget Presentations Begin Aug. 16

Ahead of the start of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, South Fulton will hold a series of department budget presentations. The presentations will be held over two full days, Tuesday, Aug. 16 and Thursday, Aug. 18, starting at 10 a.m. City staff will provide an overview of their budget requests, including those related to economic development, parks, police and public works. Last year's budget focused on "resilience, inclusion, strength and experience," and included over $90 million in investments into public safety, transportation, technology and other critical areas. Qualifying Begins This Week for South Fulton Special Election

Qualifying for South Fulton's Municipal Special Election for District 7 begins Wednesday, Aug. 17. The election is being held to fill the unexpired term of former Councilmember Mark Baker who resigned to run for U.S. Congress. Qualifying runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, Aug. 19. Potential candidates should contact the City Clerk for qualification materials via phone, email or by visiting City Hall, 5440 Fulton Industrial Blvd.The qualifying fee is $830.28. Acceptable forms of payment are certified check, money order or credit card. Under Georgia law, a candidate may file a pauper's affidavit in lieu of paying the required fee. The nonprofit that works to end hunger in 29 metro Atlanta and North Georgia counties named Sharay Erskine as Chief Information Officer and Kenneth Hill as Chief Supply Chain Officer. South Fulton Police Department Reports Decrease in Violent Crime

According to a press release from the City of South Fulton, the rate of violent crime in the area is decreasing. Police say that an increased focus on the core issues at the center of violent crime has led to a decrease in the murder rate by nearly half. From January through June 2021, the city investigated 11 homicides. In the same timeframe this year, six murders have been reported – a decline of 45 percent. South Fulton to Hold Spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 21

South Fulton will hold its annual Spring Cleanup Day this year on Saturday, May 21. The city will accept bulky items for free disposal at Merk Miles Transfer Station, 3070 Merk Road, and Creel Park, 2775 Creel Road. Paper shredding will be available at Merk Road only. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gates will close at 1:30 p.m. Free disposal is available only to South Fulton residents. The city will accept cardboard, furniture, garbage, paint and a maximum of four tires. Items that will not be accepted include: commercial vehicles; rented trucks; yard waste; ammunition; biohazard or biomedical waste; batteries; construction demolition debris; and hazardous chemicals. South Fulton Restauranteur Gocha Hawkins to Open Tapas Bar

Gocha Hawkins, owner of Gocha’s Breakfast Bar, has plans to open a tapas bar in April. The new restaurant will be located at 5829 Campbellton Rd. in the Sandtown Crossing development anchored by Publix. The restaurant will have a 1,500-square-foot interior and a 2,100-square-foot patio. Among the items planned for the menu include shishito peppers, Impossible sliders, stuffed crab mushrooms, fried green tomatoes with crab salad, cauliflower tacos and lobster rolls. The tapas bar will also have a full bar and cocktail list. City of South Fulton officials have named members to the city’s two Main Street Boards serving the Red Oak and Old National business districts. Each advisory board consists of seven board members with the initial appointments serving terms of one two and three years. Each subsequent appointment will serve a three-year term. The boards manage several tasks, including promoting and marketing their districts; making policy recommendations and encouraging high quality design, maintenance, renovation and repurposing of historic buildings.
