This week, South Fulton celebrated two years as a new city. The milestone was marked by a State of the City Address, billed as the city’s first, at the Southwest Arts Center. The program began with a rousing selection from the Westlake High School marching band, followed by prayers from community members of various faiths and reflections from residents and elected officials. At the end of March, South Fulton's city council unanimously passed a resolution authorizing an agreement with BAE Urban Economics. The firm has been tapped to prepare the city's economic development strategic plan. “I am excited about the council’s decision," said Odie Donald II, city manager. "This allows the city to engage with qualified experts who can assist us in developing a comprehensive strategic plan that will result in the development of a strong economic base for our city and a diversified economy." South Fulton Eggstravaganza: The Hunt for 12,000 Eggs Begins Sunday

South Fulton residents are getting ready for a host of Easter events this Sunday. One of the highlights of the weekend will undoubtedly be the 2nd Annual Spring Eggstravaganza hosted by Old National Entertainment in partnership with the City of South Fulton. The event will take place on Easter Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Creel Park (2775 Creel Road). Attendees have lots to look forward to including live performances and a kids’ fashion show. A marketplace featuring youth vendors is also back this year. Event organizers have included it as a clever and fun way to teach tiny tycoons in the making about the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. Judges Pro-Tem Monica Ewing and Stefani Lacour Sworn In

Monica Ewing and Stefani Lacour will both serve as Judge Pro-Tem in the City of South Fulton’s Municipal Court. They were sworn in this week by Mayor William “Bill” Edwards. Monica Ewing has previously served as a magistrate judge in Fulton County and has presided over courts in multiple cities in the region including Fairburn and Hapeville. Ewing is a graduate of Emory University School of Law. She got her start in the office of City of Atlanta Attorney Marva Brooks, and later made a name for herself as an entertainment attorney. She has also worked as an adjunct professor at Georgia State University and is the creator of The Stand Down Court, a program that assists homeless veterans who have outstanding warrants and misdemeanor charges. South Fulton Police Department Celebrates Milestones, Growth

Just over a year after its launch, the South Fulton Police Department is celebrating key milestones and significant growth in the size of its force. When the police department transitioned in late March of 2018 from Fulton County to the City of South Fulton, it was comprised of just 85 sworn officers. To date, the police force has grown by more than 50 percent. As of March 25, according to Police Chief Meadows, the department was down to its last 16 vacancies with 15 candidates scheduled to go before the hiring board. Aggressive recruiting methods have helped the department to increase its gang unit, narcotics unit and court service section. On April 18, the South Fulton Human Services Coalition will hold its second annual summit from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Andrew & Walter Young Family YMCA (2220 Campbellton Road, SW). The theme of the event is "The Urgency of Now: Transforming South Fulton County." FCS Superintendent Finalist to Meet with Public at Westlake on April 18

The Fulton County School (FCS) Board will announce the finalist for permanent Superintendent on April 17 at 12:00 p.m. at the Fulton County School North Learning Center (450 Northridge Parkway, Sandy Springs). In accordance with Georgia law, the school board must provide a minimum of 14 days for public input on the finalist before a final vote to fill the position. Principals, teachers, staff, parents and students are encouraged to meet the finalist and learn more about his or her vision for the school system.
