Old National Merchants Host Annual Toy Drive

Tonight, December 5, the Old National Merchants Association will host its customer appreciation party and toy drive. The event takes place every December in time for the holiday season. Festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Diamond Hall & Conference Center located at 5495 Old National Highway, #C9. Guests are asked to bring an unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more or a monetary donation. Richard Thweatt, the owner of Diamond Hall says that the event benefits area families who are facing hardships. "Over the years that we've been doing this, we've run into a lot of underprivileged families," said Thweatt at last year's event. "We get lists of people who are in need from neighborhoods and churches. We don't just want to give the gifts to anyone. We want them to go to peop...

City Provides Land for Potential $350 Million Mixed-Use Project on Old National Highway

At a special called meeting earlier today, the city council voted to approve a transfer of land along Old National Highway to the city’s development authority as the site of a proposed mixed-use development that would represent an investment of more than $350 million and include retail and office space as well as a hotel. The two undeveloped parcels transferred together make up about 64 acres of the park site. The agreement placed ownership of the land in the hands of the South Fulton Development Authority. The planned development would have no impact on the park or recreation services. It is anticipated that it would provide a major economic boost to the area and the city. “This project would not interfere with the programming residents enjoy at Old National Park,” said Mayor Pro...

South Fulton Resident Provides Healing and Opportunities through Art

If you want to know how to craft a life you love, just ask South Fulton’s Ashley Nicole Daramola. The Westlake alumna opened the doors to her new business, ArtzyBella Studio + Shop in East Point earlier this year. It’s a cozy and colorful spot for painting, DIYing and creating away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But while it might look like other art studios, it’s actually unlike anything in the area. Daramola is using her background in mental health to chart new ground in how art is used as a tool for self-care and coping with trauma. “I want to encourage people to incorporate art into their daily routine like yoga or healthy eating because it just helps you process,” she said. “We’re all under stress, especially if you have a job or a family, and I’ve been able to ...

Seasonal Cleaning: Be Careful What You Store in the Basement

It’s fall clean-up day in the city of South Fulton, and the perfect time to get your home ready for the holidays. For many, the decluttering is underway and while some items may be headed to the trash pile, others may be headed to storage in the basement. But according to State Farm, the basement shouldn’t be a catchall for any and everything that hasn’t yet (or may never) find a home above ground. Basements can be prone to flooding, moisture-related mold and even insects. A few items that should never be stored in the basement include electronics, artwork, books and important documents. Poor ventilation and humidity can wreak havoc on these possessions. Instead, leave the basement storage for things like furniture, bulk household and kitchen supplies, non-perishable food and ...
