State Superintendent Visits Banneker to See and Hear Its ‘Turnaround Story’

State Superintendent Richard Woods visited Banneker High School on March 7 to see and hear the school’s “turnaround story.” Once designated as an underperforming school, student achievement has significantly improved in recent years under the leadership of its principal, Dr. Duke Bradley III. The school’s graduation rate has dramatically increased along with test scores and overall student performance. Recently, Banneker was removed from the state’s failing schools list and was named a “Beating The Odds” school in 2018. “It is always great to see a school striving to make improvements,” said Superintendent Woods. “All of us, as educators, share the responsibility to continuously improve so we can better serve students.” State legislators and Fulton County School Board members were also pr...

Five Students Face Discipline for Sharing Drug-Tainted Food

Five Sandtown Middle School students are facing school punishment for their involvement in the February 14 incident that sent 28 students to nearby hospitals after potentially eating snacks and candy tainted with drugs. Additional students may face disciplinary consequences as the investigation continues. The school district has begun the disciplinary process by charging students for actions related to the consumption, possession and/or the distribution of illegal substances. Punishment for these behaviors may fall under “Tier IV: Serious Acts of Misconduct” of the Fulton County Schools Student Code of Conduct. “Tier IV carries the highest level of consequences for acts of misconduct considered the most serious,” said Cliff Jones, chief academic officer for Fulton County Schools. “These a...

Annual Breakfast Brings Realtors and South Fulton Educators Together

Fulton County Schools’ (FCS) third annual Realtor Breakfast was held earlier this month for the South Fulton community at A. Philip Randolph Elementary School. The event brought realtors and educators together to network and learn about the advantages of attending Fulton County schools. Director of Community Relations Samantha Maxey, who coordinated the events, said that one of the benefits of the strategic gatherings is that it affords area realtors an opportunity to learn about the schools so they are informed when selling homes to potential clients. “Realtors are often the first people homebuyers meet in local communities, and these breakfasts allow FCS leaders to extend a welcoming hand several times throughout the school year to keep the realtor community up-to-date on current inform...
