Councilmember Reeves to Hold First Town Hall at Burdett Park

South Fulton's District 5 City Councilmember Corey Reeves will hold his first town hall meeting since taking office at the top of the year on Saturday, February 1 at Burdett Park. Fulton County Commissioner Joe Carn has teamed up to join him for the tailgate-themed event. The town hall will kick off at 10:00 a.m. The agenda will include community updates, including information on the SeeClickFix app and Census 2020. Refreshments will be served. True Colors Continues Free Play Readings at Southwest Arts Center

True Colors Theatre Company continues its free play reading series with If Pretty Hurts... by Tori Sampson. The play is a contemporary riff on a Nigerian fable about a pretty girl and seven jealous women. It earned Sampson the Kennedy Center's Paula Vogel playwright prize. Sampson says the play meshes contemporary African and American culture and takes on how Black women view beauty. The play raises a number of questions for audiences including what it means to be a Black woman in today's society, how beauty is celebrated and how women are sometimes taught not to love themselves. Exhibit of African-American Inventors Returns to Welcome All Park

Black History Month in South Fulton will kick off with an exhibit of African-American inventors on Feb. 1 at Welcome All Park, 4255 Will Lee Road. Created by Sheliah Gray, the traveling exhibit displays 26 inventions in alphabetical order from A to Z. The exhibit has been displayed in schools, churches, libraries and other venues since 2013. “The exhibit exposes visitors to various inventions by African Americans and cultivates conversations about how these inventions impact our society today,” said Tony Phillips, director of the City of South Fulton's Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. “It generates a desire for some to become entrepreneurs and it promotes new interest and an increased awareness of inventions by African Americans.” In past years at Welcome A...

Atlanta Track Club 12K Planned for Saturday in South Fulton

The Jerome Scales Southside 12K presented by Delta® Air Lines is planned for Saturday, Jan. 11 in South Fulton. The race is coordinated in partnership with the Atlanta Track Club and the South Fulton Running Partners, and is the second stop on the 2020 Grand Prix Series presented by Piedmont Healthcare. Event organizers are expecting 1,250 attendees, and the race will start and finish at Wolf Creek Amphitheater. Registration is still open. New this year, participants will have the option to run the 12K distance or a 4.3 mile fun run. 12K finishers are eligible for overall, age grade and age group awards. For three years, this has been the tagline of Bring Out The Dolls in South Fulton, an annual event held by Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs and AIME Founder Tracy Rolle. The mission of the event has been to collect diverse dolls that help the recipients to develop and affirm a positive self-image. This week, that mission came to life when the young woman who inspired Bring Out The Dolls visited South Fulton to be honored with a proclamation from the city. South Fulton businesses and residents will be honoring veterans in and around the city on Monday, November 11 in a variety of ways. Stacey Abrams will be the special guest speaker at the Atlanta Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc's Veterans Day event at 11:00 a.m. The event will take place at Prince Hall Grand East, 7340 Old National Highway. Santa Headed to Old National Tree Lighting Event

It's going to be a busy season for Santa. But before the hustle and bustle begins, he and Mrs. Claus will be making a stop in South Fulton for the inaugural holiday tree lighting event at Old National Market Place. Planned for November 15, the family event will feature free face painting, a trackless train and a 35-foot tall tree with energy efficient LED lights. Old National Market Place, located at 6385 Old National Highway, is anchored by LA Fitness, Burlington and Marshalls, along with other national and regional tenants.
