School Board to Hold Feb. 20 Meeting and Hearing on Closure of S.L. Lewis Elementary

The Fulton County Board of Education will meet Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the South Learning Center at 4025 Flat Shoals Road in Union City. All topics up for approval are posted on BoardDocs, including the closure of S.L. Lewis Elementary. In Capital Plan 2027 funded by ESPLOST, Fulton County Schools has outlined plans to close the existing S.L Lewis Elementary School and rebuild a new school at the same location to open Aug. 2026. Should the closure of S. L. Lewis Elementary be approved as anticipated during the Feb. 20 hearing, the facility will close permanently at the end of the school year, and students will be reassigned to Mary M. South Fulton City Hall Closes for Mold Remediation

City of South Fulton officials have announced that City Hall will be temporarily closed starting today, Feb. 20, due to the discovery of mold in the building. Extensive mold was found in three offices at 5440 Fulton Industrial Blvd. during recent inspections, prompting officials to take action. To fully address the issue, the landlord and the city have decided that substantial drywall removal is necessary in all impacted areas with exterior windows. While remediation work takes place, the Community Development and Regulatory Affairs (CDRA) department will relocate to 6095 Boat Rock Blvd. CDRA handles the intake and processing of land disturbance permits, building permits, plan review and other planning and zoning activities. Newly-elected Councilwoman Keosha B. Bell (D-5) will host "Let's Talk" on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. The event, advertised as a meet and greet, will be held at the Burdett Park (2945 Burdett Road) in the multipurpose room. The event will give District 5 residents an opportunity to meet their new representative. Mausiki Scales, Atlanta Drum Academy Lead Red Oak Festival Lineup

The Annual Red Oak Art Festival returns to the City of South Fulton on Saturday, Oct. 15. Now in its second year, the festival promises an expanded lineup of artists, artisans and performers from across the metro Atlanta area. This year’s musical lineup includes performances by Mausiki Scales and Common Ground Collective, Planet Alstarz, local cellist Jenn Cornell, and classical guitarist Gladius.  A performance by the Atlanta Drum Academy is also planned. Redistricting 101: Fulton County Schools Parents Invited to Attend Info Sessions

Fulton County Schools (FCS) is planning a districtwide school redistricting effort. In South Fulton alone, there are capacity imbalances at more than 20 elementary schools, seven middle schools and five high schools. Parents are encouraged to attend virtual meetings to learn more. The meetings, titled Redistricting 101, are set for August 30 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and August 31 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the meetings, FCS staff will explain the redistricting process, including population trends throughout Fulton County, data, and the School Board's criteria used to create new attendance zone boundaries. Final Public Hearing on Millage Rate Planned for Aug. 31

South Fulton held the first of three public hearings on the millage rate on Aug. 24. City staff is recommending that the mayor and city council maintain the 2022 millage rate of 12.899. “The reason for the recommendation is based on the fact that developing an operating and capital budget for a municipality is a very complex and layered task," said City Manager Tammi Sadler Jones in a press release. “We prepare revenue and personnel projections as well as examine the requests submitted from departments. It is a balancing act between the desired service level and the cost of those service levels. South Fulton is now home to Captain D's first-ever "Express" restaurant. Anil Dossani, the restaurant's operator, celebrated the grand opening today along with the South Fulton Chamber, Old National Merchants Association and members of the community. During the pandemic, Captain D's was among many fast-casual chains forced to close their dining rooms in an effort to adapt to CDC-recommended protocols. Due to the successful pivot in operations, the new restaurant prototype was born.
