Skyhawks Host 70 Youth for Basketball Clinic at Welcome All Park

The College Park Skyhawks, the NBA G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, in partnership with Kenneth S. Nugent, Attorneys at Law, hosted a basketball clinic earlier this month for 70 youth at Welcome All Park in South Fulton. The clinic was conducted by the coaching staff of the Skyhawks, including Head Coach Steve Gansey. Assistant coaches Ronnie Burrell and Da’Sean Butler joined Gansey to teach kids fundamentals of the game and fine-tune their skills. “Getting out in the community to engage with kids and teach them the game we all love is one of the best parts of the job,” said Gansey. “It was great to get outside and spend the day with the kids, and with the help of Ken Nugent and his team it was an amazing event.”  The clinic helped strengthen basketball...

John Sherman, president and CEO of Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Inc. Sandtown Residents Collaborate with Artist on City’s First Creative Placemaking Project

After a series of community brainstorming meetings and coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), South Fulton's first creative placemaking project has been installed. The four-panel monument in the roundabout at the intersection of Campbellton, Boat Rock and New Hope showcases the diverse natural surroundings of the Sandtown community. The project, which began in 2018, was spearheaded by District 1 Councilwoman Catherine Foster Rowell. She tapped local artist Allen Peterson to produce the artwork. Over a period of several months, Peterson and his design partner, Julia Hill, toured the Sandtown community and took photos for inspiration, and collaborated with residents on imagery and design during multiple meetings. The 14th Annual Atlanta Quilt Festival is headed to Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road. The exhibit, held in partnership with Acres of Ancestry, South Fulton Institute and Southern Poverty Law Center, will run Aug. 6 thru Sept. 2. Over 100 quilts celebrating the African-American heritage will be displayed. This year's exhibit will honor the life and legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis. South Fulton will host National Night Out (NNO) on Aug. 2. The annual event, first introduced in 1984, is held in cities across the U.S. to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement and help cultivate a sense of community. “Cities and towns are excited to get the NNO party started,” said National Night Out creator, Matt Peskin, “Local coordinators are anxious to showcase their strong relationships with neighbors and first-responders. South Fulton’s Public Art Commission is soliciting feedback on the future of public art in the city via an online survey available through September 30. Input from the survey will be incorporated into the city’s first public art master plan.  Input is sought from residents, city leaders and personnel, business owners, local artists, and other stakeholders. Feedback will help to guide future programming and funding priorities.  Two projects have been completed in South Fulton this year.
