South Fulton to Honor Former Westlake Lion Who Roared Back from Horrific Injury

The City of South Fulton will celebrate Christion Abercrombie Day Thursday, December 19 at Westlake High School at 6 p.m. Abercrombie sustained a severe brain injury during a college football game in 2018, but has made remarkable progress in the months since. "Christion continues to be a huge inspiration to all of us," said Mayor William "Bill" Edwards. "Dolls come in every hue, bring a doll that looks like you." For three years, this has been the tagline of Bring Out The Dolls in South Fulton, an annual event held by Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs and AIME Founder Tracy Rolle. The mission of the event has been to collect diverse dolls that help the recipients to develop and affirm a positive self-image. This week, that mission came to life when the young woman who inspired Bring Out The Dolls visited South Fulton to be honored with a proclamation from the city. The East Point/College Park Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has become the first organization to adopt a road as part of the City of South Fulton's new beautification program. The Butner Road project falls under the chapter's environmental health program and is in conjunction with the chapter's 40th anniversary. “We are proud to partner with the City of South Fulton in its inaugural year of the Adopt-A-Road initiative," said Chapter President Debra Bunkley. Families and organizations are coming together across South Fulton to lend a helping hand to those in need. And 12-year old C.J. Matthews, founder of Blankies 4 My Buddies, is helping to lead the way. C.J. created his nonprofit in 2013 after his mother suffered a devastating pregnancy loss. He wanted to find a way to help children and families who are coping with difficult situations. His efforts to collect blankets to distribute at hospitals and shelters have attracted lots of local attention. South Fulton gathered over the weekend for the 7th Annual Atlanta Turkey Classic at the Tracey Wyatt Recreation Center in College Park. The event is a community outreach initiative of the Georgia Spartans, a semi-professional basketball team that strives to give back each year in numerous ways. This year was the first time that the event has been held along the Old National Corridor. Old National Market Place celebrated the start of the holiday season with its first inaugural tree lighting event. South Fulton families didn't let the rain dampen their spirits. South Fulton residents will have a chance to dispose of their bulky waste and shred documents for free during the city's 2019 Fall Clean-up Day on November 16 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Drop-off locations include Merk Miles Transfer Station (3225 Merk Road), South Fulton Service Center (5601 Stonewall Tell Road) and Creel Park (2775 Creel Road). Document shredding and household chemical disposal will only be available at the transfer station.
