Miracle League Recruiting Players, Volunteers for Fall Season

The South Fulton Miracle League’s fall season is underway. The league held their first game on September 12 at Welcome All Park. The Miracle League was first launched in 2000 in Georgia. It has since evolved into a global program that helps remove the barriers that keep players with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field. The South Fulton chapter has operated as a nonprofit organization in the area for 15 years at Welcome All Park. Games have two innings. Everyone bats, everyone gets a chance to cross home plate and everyone wins. 125 Donors Needed for Citywide Blood Drive in South Fulton

The American Red Cross is partnering with The City of South Fulton and the Office of the Chaplain to hold a citywide blood drive on September 27 aimed at raising awareness for the urgent need for blood. The drive is also being held to encourage minority and faith-based communities to give now in honor of Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September. Sickle cell disease is the most common genetic blood disease in the U.S., and patients often require regular blood transfusions. Transfusions from blood donors of the same ethnic background are most beneficial as they have less chance of causing complications for the recipient. “It is vital that the blood supply for the Red Cross reflect the diversity of our population to best meet the needs of all,” said City Chaplain Warren Henry. “Whethe...

9-11 First Responder Says Day Should be a Catalyst to Bring South Fulton Together

South Fulton residents and city personnel took time today to remember the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. Elected officials shared solemn words and prayers with constituents. South Fulton police officers and other first responders were honored at an appreciation breakfast at Southwest Arts Center. The Creekside High School JROTC held a small service to memorialize all military, public service workers and families that lost their lives. One South Fulton resident, Nick Farr, called for a moment of silence on Nextdoor.com. For him, the day has more meaning that it does to most. He was one of the brave responders at the World Trade Center 18 years ago, and he’s never sure how he’ll feel when the date comes around year after year. “Some day...

Lady Stallions Get Ready to Kick off Fall Season

Now in its third year, the Lady Stallions Kickball Team is on a roll. The program provides women in the community with a fun way to stay in shape and make new friends. The team plays three seasons out of the year, and this spring went 7-0. Later this month, the Lady Stallions will kick off the fall season, and all women ages 18 and up are welcome to join in on the fun. “We fellowship, network and support each other, and help each other stay fit,” said Delphine Knaff, a 50-year old South Fulton Lady Stallions team member who plays pitcher as well as other positions. “We’ve had women in the league that are 60 and 70 years old, your age doesn’t matter.” While the team has strong presence in South Fulton and routinely practices at Sandtown Park, there’s technically not a kickball ...

Nonprofits Partner to Grant Wish of Deserving South Fulton Family

Since 2012, Sunshine on a Ranney Day has been renovating homes for children in need. Now one deserving South Fulton family is benefiting from the organization’s generosity. Landon Milligan, age 9, had a successful heart transplant at just six months old. But a year later, he suffered from bacterial meningitis, which caused brain damage. As a result, Landon is non-mobile and non-verbal, but communicates through laughs and smiles. Some of Landon’s favorite pastimes are spending time outside in the sunshine and shower time. To help make shower time easier for Landon and his family, Sunshine on a Ranney Day in partnership with Make a Wish Georgia is completing a total bathroom renovation. The nonprofit’s bathroom renovations are a $35,000 investment on average and are tailored to m...

They also had an opportunity to hear the personal stories, steeped in rich history, of some of the people who created them. “Almost everybody I know loves quilts,” said O.V. Brantley, the South Fulton resident who founded the Atlanta Quilt Festival.  “If you say the word quilt, people will say ‘my grandmother used to quilt.’ It brings back fond memories for ...

On May 25, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point graduated its largest ever group of black women. The 34 history-makers recently posed for an internet-breaking photo. Among them was 2nd Lieutenant Imani Simmons, a graduate of Westlake High School in South Fulton. She recently posted on her Instagram, "For every one who thought I couldn't, there were 10 more who knew I would." Major Wade Johnson and Sergeant Major Yolanda Johnson, Westlake's JROTC instructor were two of the 10. "I chose to attend West Point because of my mentors Major Wade Johnson and Sergeant Major Yolanda Johnson," said 2nd Lieutenant Simmons.
