MLB Great Marquis Grissom Launches Fall Baseball League at Welcome All Park

When Marquis Grissom caught the final out in the 1995 World Series, he secured the Atlanta Braves' only world championship win. Now he's helping to groom another generation of world class players. The Marquis Grissom Baseball Association (MGBA) has partnered with the city of South Fulton to elevate the baseball programming offered at Welcome All Park. Registration is currently open for the fall baseball league, an eight week program that starts on August 14. Ages seven to 13 are eligible to participate. City Manager Transmits $100 Million Budget Draft; Public Hearing Set for Aug. 27

A draft of South Fulton’s FY2020 budget is now available for review. Among the city’s budget priorities are to increase staffing capacity, grow commercial business revenues, make improvements to roads and parks, and brand and market the city. Total anticipated revenue for FY2020 is $104,913,204. Of those dollars: general refund revenue totals $72,117,952; TSPLOST dollars total $17,951,476; $4,595,560 will come from restricted grants for federally funded road projects; and $9,448,216 is for capital projects. The remainder of the funds are to come from the hotel/motel fund and solid waste fund. Anticipated total expenditures amount to $100,696,351. The city’s budget plans are ambitious. Fresh off a win at the 2019 BB&T Atlanta Open women’s exhibition, Venus Williams stopped by the South Fulton Tennis Center to encourage young players. The visit was part of USTA’s Net Generation Campaign which aims to inspire and help build a new generation of tennis greats. Williams took time to hit a few balls, give high fives and offer pointers and words of encouragement to approximately 100 kids enrolled in the center's tennis camp. The city of South Fulton is still celebrating the arrival of Fire Chief Freddie Broome. He was named to the position on May 14. Last weekend, residents, city personnel and elected officials gathered at the Aviation Community Cultural Center to officially welcome him. Chief Broome is appreciative of the warm response. He said that one of the things that has impressed him most since he arrived is the community support. “Everyone has opened their arms and welcomed me in, and that means a lot.” Much of the excitement is around Chief Broome’s experience and strong reputation in the fire services industry. Portion of Boat Rock Road Closed for Filming; Simulated Explosion Planned

From Monday, July 15 through Friday, a portion of Boat Rock Road between Binford Place and Cascade Hills Drive will be closed approximately 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day due to the filming of "The Outsider," an HBO television series based on the work of Stephen King.Also, one eastbound lane of Boat Rock Road between Cascade Hills Drive and Mitchell Crossing Drive will be closed. Motorists traveling to and from the Cascade Hills Subdivision via Boat Rock Road will still have the ability to travel that route with the assistance of flaggers on site. Detour routes are available along New Hope Road, Reynolds Road, Bakers Ferry Road, Camp Creek Pkwy and Fulton Industrial Boulevard. South Fulton to Hold Two Special Called Meetings

The city of South Fulton's mayor and council will hold two special called meetings this week. On Monday, July 15, they'll meet at 8:30 a.m. to discuss amending the zoning moratorium. They'll hear a first reading to amend the zoning ordinance to limit uses. On Wednesday, July 17, they will enter executive session at 11:00 a.m. to discuss real estate and litigation. Both meetings will be held at City Hall (5440 Fulton Industrial Blvd.) in the break room.
