South Fulton PRCA to Hold Master Plan Open House on Jan. 29

The City of South Fulton Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) and the Parks and Recreation System Master Plan Consulting Team will hold an open house on Jan. 29. Residents are invited to attend. Residents will be able to learn more about the citywide Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Master Plan and provide ideas for how its findings may relate to individual parks. They also will be able to give input about specific improvements they would like at their parks. “The purpose of the parks master plan is to identify the needs and priorities of the community from a parks and recreation standpoint, and look at ways to enhance the parks system as well as programs in the community,” said Carlos Perez, the consultant leading the effort. South Fulton’s Damacia Howard Crowned National American Miss National Teen

South Fulton resident Damacia Howard was recently crowned the 2021-2022 National American Miss (NAM) Teen at the 2021 I am Pageant Powerhouse Convention. The event was held in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday, November 28. Howard competed against 35 teens from across the U.S., and received a prize package which included a $5,000 scholarship. Howard, age 18, is the daughter of James and Regina Howard. She is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of both Georgia Cyber Academy and Georgia Military College. She is currently a first-year honors student at Georgia State University. She's received multiple honors and awards, including being named an Outstanding Georgia Citizen. South Fulton Alphas Join City’s Adopt-a-Road Program

The Omicron Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., fondly known as the South Fulton Alphas, is the latest civic organization to join the city's Adopt-a-Road Program. Members met at Campbellton-Fairburn and Butner Road today to mark the occasion. Marshall Taggart, Jr. serves as the chapter's president. Mayor William "Bill" Edwards and City Clerk Corey Adams are also members. "It is our hope that all Greek-letter sororities and fraternities will one day have a sign on the road, and periodically clean up the street that they have adopted," said Mayor Edwards. South Fulton to Hold Spring Cleanup Day on April 10

South Fulton will hold its annual Spring Cleanup Day this year on April 10. The city will accept bulky and hazardous items for free disposal at the Merk Miles Transfer Station, 3325 Merk Road, and at Creel Park, 2775 Creel Road. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gates will close at 1:30 p.m. Free disposal is available only to South Fulton residents. “We are asking people help us tackle illegal dumping in our city,” said Mayor William “Bill” Edwards. “Often, people leave items like tires, mattresses, and other bulk trash along roadsides and in secluded areas, causing dangerous eyesores. South Fulton Officials Continue Food Distribution at Welcome All Park on Friday

The City of South Fulton's series of weekly food distribution events continues this Friday, August 21 at Welcome All Park, 4255 Will Lee Road. Residents can drive through the site to pick up food starting at 11 a.m. The initiative has been part of the city's response to help local families financially impacted by COVID-19. Much of the food has been provided by the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Volunteers from a number of companies and organizations have also assisted in the effort. This week, the city will partner with the Omicron Kappa Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, State Farm and Coca-Cola Bottling Company to help distribute food and other goods. Be The Match Encourages Donors to Join Registry During African-American Bone Marrow Awareness Month

For patients with sickle cell, leukemia, lymphoma, and more, a blood stem cell transplant from a genetically matched donor can be the key to a cure. However, of the 22 million people on the Be The Match registry, only four percent are Black or African-American. As a result, Black and African-American patients only have a 23 percent chance of finding a match by ethnicity compared to a 77 percent chance for White patients. Be The Match representatives and supporters are mobilizing Black and African-American donors to sign up for the registry during African-American Bone Marrow Awareness Month which is observed annually in July. South Fulton organizers have planned a march following the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks and many others. The Black Fathers Are D.O.P.E. Teens Looking for Change will lead “The Stand Out,” a peaceful protest at Piedmont Park today, June 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The group is comprised of high schoolers from Fulton County Schools and Atlanta Public Schools, representing Banneker, Westlake, Grady and North Springs. The students shared their vision for the event in a Zoom conference last night hosted by Willie Davis, Jr., candidate for Fulton County School Board. Nearly 100,000 Pounds of Food Distributed to South Fulton with the Help of Partners

As part of a month-long drive, nearly 100,000 pounds of food have been distributed to South Fulton residents in need. City leaders launched the effort in late April to help residents impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Much of the food has been provided by the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and nearly a dozen partners and sponsors have joined the initiative to ensure enough support was available to distribute the food.
